#2005-9 : Medicare prescription drug enrollment begins

Today is the first day that Medicare recipients can enroll in a prescription drug plan under the new Medicare Part D. Enrolling before December 31 means the benefit will begin January 1, 2006, though recipients have until May 15, 2006, to enroll without paying a penalty on plan premiums.

Individuals who have both Medicare and Medicaid and receive drug benefits from Medicaid must also now enroll in a Medicare drug plan. Beginning January 1, federal law prohibits Medicaid from providing prescription drugs that Medicare will offer.

Companies offering national and regional plans have been mailing information to potential customers for the past month. A search is also available on the Medicare Web site at www.medicare.gov.

Subscribers to the Elder Client Planner can research past articles about Medicare Part D at www.elderclientplanner.com. Just click on “Articles,” enter the subscriber user name and password, and look under the category “Health Care: Medicare.”  Not a subscriber?
